Architect registration
Anyone who wishes to work as an architect in Victoria must register with the Architects Registration Board of Victoria. Applicants must hold an approved qualification, have at least two years’ practical experience, complete a registration pathway (e.g., the Architectural Practice Examination), pay the fee, carry professional indemnity insurance and be a fit and proper person.
Professional indemnity insurance
Practising architects must maintain professional indemnity insurance. The Minister has specified that cover must be not less than $1 million, plus at least $200,000 or 20% for defence costs with one automatic reinstatement. Proof of insurance must be provided at registration and whenever the policy changes.
Continuing professional development
Practising architects must complete at least 20 hours of continuing professional development each year, including at least 10 hours of formal activities, and declare compliance at annual renewal. Non-practising architects are exempt.
Fit and proper person requirements
Applicants must be 'fit and proper' and must disclose any criminal convictions, disciplinary action or insolvency matters when applying. The ARBV will consider these matters and may refuse registration or renewals based on probity.
NCC compliance
Architects must ensure their designs and documentation comply with the National Construction Code; building approvals cannot be issued unless the NCC is met.
