Applicants without current Australian Institute of Building Surveyors or Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors accreditation must submit a technical referee report, experience statement, logbook and evidence portfolio when applying for registration as a building surveyor.

Building surveyors, unlimited and limited, must hold professional indemnity insurance; evidence of cover is required for registration and renewal, and failure to maintain insurance will result in suspension.

Since 1 January 2021 all registered building surveyors must follow the Code of Conduct, which requires acting in the public interest, acting with integrity, performing competently within expertise, acting independently, avoiding conflicts of interest, keeping records and responding to complaints.
