Cladding Licensing & Rules in New South Wales
Important regulations and resources to help you hire with confidence in New South Wales.
High-risk work licence
SafeWork NSW requires a licence for 29 high-risk work classes, including cranes, forklifts, rigging, scaffolding and pressure equipment. Licences are valid for five years and require formal training and assessment; trainees must be supervised until licensed.
Plant item registration
Owners or lessees must register specified plant—tower cranes, mobile cranes over 10 tonnes, lifts, building maintenance units, boilers (hazard level A-C), pressure vessels (A-C), amusement devices and concrete-placing booms. Unregistered plant must not be used.
Contractor licence for building work
Individuals contracting or subcontracting to perform residential building or trade work costing more than AU$5,000 (including labour and materials) must hold a contractor licence from NSW Fair Trading, meet qualification and experience requirements and have required insurance under the Home Building Compensation Fund.
Supplier safety obligations
Manufacturers, importers and suppliers of plant must ensure equipment supplied is safe and without risks. Imported plant must be inspected and tested; hazard information and safe-use instructions must be provided to hirers before supply.
Recommended insurance
Public liability, product liability and plant insurance are recommended for equipment hire providers. Employers must hold workers compensation insurance for employees.
