Obtain demolition work licence
A person conducting a business or undertaking must hold a demolition work licence to demolish structures involving pre- or post-tensioned components, the use of load-shifting equipment such as excavators or cranes, or explosives. Domestic houses are exempt unless these conditions apply.
Nominated competent person
The licence holder must nominate a competent person who is present or readily available during demolition (WHS Regulation 142). Workers must be properly trained and supervised, and the licence must be renewed every two years.

Notification to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland is required at least five days before demolishing structures ≥6 m high, using load-shifting machinery on suspended floors or using explosives. Emergency demolition must be notified immediately.
Prepare a SWMS
Because demolition is high-risk construction work, a Safe Work Method Statement must be prepared. It must identify hazards such as structural collapse and asbestos, outline control measures, and be reviewed when work methods change.
