Important regulations and resources to help you hire with confidence in Victoria.
Register as a demolisher
Victoria registers demolishers in three classes: Low rise (structures up to two storeys), Medium rise (up to five storeys) and Unlimited (all buildings including special buildings). Registered demolishers must ensure demolition permits are obtained for each project.
Meet experience requirements
Low-rise applicants must show they have managed at least five demolition projects up to two storeys, including hazardous materials removal and commercial buildings. Medium-rise applicants must show similar experience on buildings up to five storeys and demonstrate skills in manual, mechanical, collapse and explosives methods.
Demonstrate technical competence
Applicants must either complete Certificate III or IV in Demolition or demonstrate equivalent knowledge. Registered demolishers must be able to prepare quotes, consult engineers, develop demolition work plans, obtain permits, identify hazards, prepare Safe Work Method Statements and manage asbestos risk registers.
Notify WorkSafe Victoria
Although Victoria has its own OHS laws, general WHS guidance requires notification at least five days before demolishing load-bearing structures ≥6 m high, using load-shifting machinery on suspended floors or using explosives.
Register for domestic demolition
Any person performing demolition, re-blocking or restumping work on a domestic house or carrying out domestic building work worth over $5,000 must be registered as a building practitioner with the Building & Plumbing Commission.
