Electrical Licensing & Rules in Victoria
Important regulations and resources to help you hire with confidence in Victoria.
Electrician's Licence Required
Electricians in Victoria must hold a current Victorian Electrician’s Licence (A‑Grade) issued by Energy Safe Victoria (ESV). A business that offers or contracts to perform electrical work must be registered as a Registered Electrical Contractor (REC) with ESV.
Electrical Safety Compliance
Licensed electricians and registered contractors must comply with the Electrical Safety Act and AS/NZS 3000. Electrical installation work must be safe, inspected if required and carried out by qualified persons.
WorkSafe Victoria Registration
There is no separate WorkSafe registration; however, electrical businesses must comply with occupational health and safety laws, including risk management, training and safe systems of work.
Certificate of Electrical Safety
For every electrical installation, the REC must issue a Certificate of Electrical Safety, provide a copy to the customer and lodge it electronically with Energy Safe Victoria.
Public Liability Insurance
Registered Electrical Contractors must hold current public liability insurance with a minimum cover of $5 million against personal injury or property damage. Carrying out electrical contracting work without the required insurance is a criminal offence.
