Interior Designing Licensing & Rules in Northern Territory
Important regulations and resources to help you hire with confidence in Northern Territory.
Optional registration with NT Board
Interior designers can apply for registration as building practitioners under the Building Practitioners Board. Qualifications, experience and insurance requirements are set out in Ministerial Determination No. S57 gazetted on 5 September 2025.
Engage licensed building contractors
There is no mandatory licence for interior design, but any building or structural work must be done by registered building contractors or trades. Building permits and occupancy permits are issued by certifiers under the Building Act 1993.
Mutual recognition for interstate designers
Designers registered in other states can apply for registration under mutual recognition arrangements. Registration forms and categories are available from the Building Practitioners Board.
National Construction Code compliance
Interior design documentation must comply with the NT Building Act, Building Regulations and the NCC. Certifying engineers and architects ensure that structural, mechanical and hydraulic systems meet code requirements.
Professional indemnity insurance
If registered, practitioners must carry professional indemnity insurance with typical minimum cover of $1 million. Even if unregistered, designers should hold PI and public liability insurance to protect against claims.
CPD and professional development
Registration may require evidence of continuing professional development. Designers are encouraged to undertake CPD through industry associations and to maintain qualifications and skills.
