Plastering Licensing & Rules in Tasmania

Important regulations and resources to help you hire with confidence in Tasmania.

Builder licence for plastering work

Tasmania does not have a standalone plasterer licence. Contractors who carry out building or demolition work for others, including plasterboard fixing, solid plastering and rendering, must hold a building services provider licence.

Qualification and experience requirements

Applicants must hold appropriate qualifications such as Certificate III in Wall and Ceiling Lining or Solid Plastering or Certificate IV in Building and Construction and have supervised experience.

Comply with AS/NZS 2589 and AS 4773

Install gypsum linings and masonry renders according to AS/NZS 2589 and AS 4773. Provide Grade 4 finish where required and follow manufacturer instructions for adhesive application and jointing.

White Card and WHS code

Workers must complete White Card training and comply with WorkSafe Tasmania codes of practice on working at heights, manual handling, silica dust control and safe handling of lime and cement.

Building permits and approvals

Major plastering and rendering projects, especially those affecting structural walls or facades, may require a building permit or planning approval. Engage a building surveyor to certify compliance with the Building Act and NCC.

Insurance and sustainability

Maintain public liability and workers compensation insurance, recycle plasterboard off-cuts, manage dust and wastewater, and safely dispose of asbestos or lead paint when renovating older structures.
